Under the sea theme wows the fashion crowds
The Chanel show is always the one to watch at Paris Fashion Week – whether faced with a giant golden lion, an iceberg imported from Sweden or an erupting volcano, the audience is guaranteed a high-fashion specatacle. This year was no different – Chanel transformed the Grand Palais in Paris into a gigantic white seaside paradise complete with sparkling white sand, waves of seating, a whale’s tail, seaweed, giant clams and an ornate coral reef. These were just some of the oceanic details that created a water wonderland for the Chanel Spring 2012 collection.
Pearls were prolific on the runway.
The feeling of being under water was also a feature of the ethereal, fluid nature of the clothes. Models emerged from a giant white tube while red-haired Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) sang ‘What the water gave me‘ – a song off her latest album ‘Ceremonials’ – in a half shell. With silk petals on skirt and details ressembling fish scales the clothes embraced the sea theme while presenting a series of light, airy, wearable yet elegant clothes.
Pearls were prolific on the runway – they were Coco Chanel’s jewel of choice – and Lagerfeld, in true playful style, stuck them all over the models – on their noses, bottom lips, and on the napes of their necks. This show reminded us that Lagerfeld is sticking to the label’s classic roots while still remaining relevant.
